How to Use

For Fence:

  1. Insert the probe of the tester into the soil.
  2. Remove your hand from the metal portion of the probe (to avoid a shock).
  3. To get a voltage reading, touch the metal clip (on the top of the tester) to the electrified fence you wish to test.
  4. The tester will light up according to the voltage at that location on the fence.
  5. Remove the tester from the fence and the probe from the soil. Do not remove the probe by pulling the insulated wire.
For Energizer:
  1. Turn off energizer.
  2. Disconnect ground wire and fence wire from energizer.
  3. Turn on energizer.
  4. Touch probe from tester to ground terminal on energizer (be sure to hold onto the insulated wire and not the metal probe!)
  5. At same time touch the fence hook on tester to fence terminal on energizer.
  6. The tester should light up to 6000 volts or more.

Precautions

Be careful to not pull the ground probe out of the soil by grabbing the black ground wire. The wire and the probe could become separated in which case the tester will not function.
Trouble Shooting

  • Make sure that the probe has not become separated from the black insulated wire.
  • Cup your hands around the body of the tester to keep the sun's glare off the lights of the tester.

Works great. Beats the heck out of my old method (putting my hand on it and cringing). Very handy. It's true that you may have to cup your hand over it in sunlight as another reviewer said, but it wasn't that big of a deal to me and anyway I live in the Pacific Northwest and we don't get that much bright sun LOL. I can't claim to have done any comparison shopping, but I thought it was a very inexpensive handy tool for the job. I would not have been willing to buy something more expensive, so I just never would have known if specific wires weren't carrying a charge well.

This fence tester serves its purpose to let you know the voltage of your fence. I'm sure there are more expensive testers on the market that have all the bells and whistles. If you're just looking for something tell you if you have the correct voltage, this works fine. As others said, the lights are slightly dim, but I just test later in the day or in the shade and have no problem seeing the lights.

This fence tester does not work well. It is very difficult to see the dim lights, especially since they only illuminate when the charger surges. I had to cup my hand over it to see it on a sunny day. I still couldn't see the bulbs for the higher voltages as they are dimmer than the lower voltages. You'd be better off paying $30 to get a digital fence tester (I got one at Southern States). It's easy to read and the display continues to show the charge even after removed from the fence.

I bough two of these to replace an older 5 light tester. The fence probe is far superior to the old model, but the ground rod is bent and is an odd size so it does not fit easily into your pants pocket. Overall, I like it!
