Double Insulated Wire

If you intend to build permanent electric fences, you're going to need insulated wire. All of it looks the same to the less experienced user. But the differences are in the details--gauge, tensile strength, insulation thickness and single coat of insulation vs. double coat.

Common Uses

An essential component of permanent and semi-permanent fences. It's used to carry high voltage (up to and sometimes more than 10,000 volts) pulses:

  • Through the soil under gateways
  • Between buildings and other fences
  • Between energizer and fence
  • Between energizer and ground stake
  • Between charged and earthed fence wires

Specs

  • Extra-thick layer of galvanized zinc
  • High Tensile
  • 12.5 gauge
  • 120,000 psi (tensile strength)
  • 15-20 years of probable life
  • Rated for up to 20,000 volts protection
  • Outer diamter is .37"
  • Has a double layer of polyethylene insulation for underground use.

Benefits

Double insulated wire is the most reliable choice for underground burial. (Even then it should be enclosed in 3/4 in. black plastic water pipe for extra protection from rocks and traffic.)

Why is double insulated better?

  1. Because it reduces risk of failure due to thin insulation from manufacturing error.
  2. Because the twin layers of polyethylene cope much better with being bent around posts, etc.

Installation(Tips)

Cut the double coated wire with wire cutters, strip off 3" of the insulation and attach it to your fence. Attach to high tensile fences with Manual Joint Clamps (#337000) or HT Taps (#339000) and to rope fences with Rope Connectors (#256200). It can be removed and reinstalled.

Precautions

Since fence voltages may exceed 10,000 volts, household insulated wire (rated at 600v) will eventually fail. Do not use it!
