803000 Aluminum Leg Crook (head only) In Stock 0.40 $11.50

Common Uses

Very effective for grabbing either the front or rear legs of a sheep or goat when you need to do individual treatment on an animal. Excellent for pasture situations.

Specs

  • Cast aluminum.
  • Length is 5.87".
  • 7/8" diameter hole for attaching to your own handle or to the end of our fiberglass or wooden neck crook.
  • Use 1/8" x 1/2" screw or small nail (not included) to lock into place.
  • How to Use

You can either hook the front or back leg. Probably the best way is to sneak up behind the animal in a group and hook the back leg. You need to target the location below the knee and above the hock/hoof. The depth of the hook helps reduce the chance of the animal escaping.

The Shepherd's dog whistle has evolved over the years to help shepherds & others work with "four-legged" field helpers. The whistle allows commands to carry farther and without the user's vocal inflection interfering with the commands.

I ordered this crook head a year ago. I worked wonderfully. BUT....The last time I used it, the actual hook broke off! I don't mean the shaft broke off in the head. I mean the hook broke clean off where it meets the collar that goes around the shaft. I don't know if the entire piece is cast, or if it is welded, but it appears to be a weak spot. I only have 7 sheep and have used the crook no more than 20 times (catching for shearing and then at lamb weaning). The crook was even stored inside shelter. Basically, it had no abuse and was used far less than I would assume it is designed for. I am rather disappointed.

Works as intended. I have one on the end of a length of PVC pipe and once you nab them, they are easy to grab. Getting them at the rear hock keeps them off balance enough that they can't do much to resist and there is little risk of injury.

this crook works ! no more sheep running around you trying to get loose.. once you hook them they are yours. Just don't lay it down and let it get lost! hang it in the barn have a bright color for the handle.

When it arrived I was worried the slot was too small for adult sheep legs, but it was just right. I put it on a broom handle (never liked that broom anyway), it was easy to drill and add a screw for attachment. Can catch sheep from the front or rear, then hand-over-hand the stick to get ahold of them. Don't know how I got along without it.
