Option 3 - GreenCote® Barbed Wire
Consists of 7 or 8 strands of GreenCote barbed wire secured to steel or wood posts spaced 12 to 15 ft apart. Lowest wire is at ground level to discourage canines from digging. Space wires close together near the soil. No wire is energized.
A zero-maintenance fence!
This design was suggested by goat producers in Utah. We tried it. It works very well. Deters goats, sheep, cattle and most canines because the barbs on GreenCote are unusually long and spaced close together.
Key is using good end assemblies so the wires can be strained tight. The very feature that makes it effective (the vicious barbs) means that it is not fun to install. Thick leather gloves and caution are essential.
An innovative adaption of barbed cattle fences for sheep and goats. Deters by pain (the barbs are long and close together), but it's also physically strong enough to serve as boundary fence. It's not affected by the amount of weeds or whether the soil is dry, wet or snow-covered!
GreenCote wire has 3 unique properties:
- Resists rust up to 200% longer than ordinary barbed wire. So it will look great for years and stay sharp. This is critical where rust is a problem--humid climates, near oceans and low-lying floodplains.
- Blends into natural backgrounds.
- More "aggressive" barbs.
Points to consider
- This is a hazardous fence to all humans and animals that contact it. Ugly injuries are possible.
- Don't install this fence where visitors "from the city" may encounter it.
- Barbed wire should never be electrified. The risk of entanglement is too great.
How GreenCote® "barb" differs from farm-store "barb"
GreenCote is coated with Class III or better galvanizing and then coated again with a patented colored polymer finish that doubles the number of years before rust will begin. In side-by-side controlled salt-spray tests, GreenCote HT wire lasted far longer than normal Class III galv. HT wires.
GreenCote is larger (12 gauge). Most farm-store barbed is only 14 or 15 gauge. GreenCote is heavier to ship (per ft), but it's also strong, rugged and effective.
The barbs on GreenCote are longer and spaced closer together. They're very intimidating to animals.
Listed below are the recommended components that might be needed to build this basic fence. (Some fence components have multiple choices.) Your particular situation may require alternative recommendations. If so, please call and talk to a fence consultant at 800-282-6631.
