Premier’s 4000 machine

Premier’s 4000 machine can operate either a clipping head or a shearing head. This enables one machine to do two different jobs.

June 2016

Before you buy clippers or shears...

What is the function or use?
Will the machine be removing fiber, hair or wool? Will the desired finish be for the show ring (fine) or for the range (coarse)? A shearing machine will more readily go through dirty matted hair and fiber than a clipping machine. But it is harder to set up a shearing machine correctly. Clippers are best for precision removal and shears for rapid removal.

What is your experience level?
There are combs/cutters and clipper blades that are more aggressive and some that are less so depending on the usage. If you're not sure what you need, consult the charts below to determine when to use a clipping machine or a shearing machine (and the accompanying blades, combs and cutters), by species and use.

Common mistakes:
  • Improperly tensioned or dull blades/combs/cutters are the main culprits for lack of cutting and overheating. Overtensioning will also reduce the longevity of blades/combs/cutters. Undertensioning reduces the cutting ability.
  • Proper lubrication is essential for the function of blades/combs/cutters. Lubrication reduces friction (heat) and can increase the longevity of blades/combs/cutters.
  • Over time the filters can clog with dirt and fiber. Remove the filters and scrub them with soapy water and a toothbrush. Dry and replace.
  • “Air-shearing.” This occurs when a clipper or shearer is held outside of the fleece, fiber or hair. The extra friction between the blades/combs/cutters creates heat and dulls the cutting blades, combs and/or cutter.

Resharpening Form

Superior service with fast turnaround…

Clipper blades, combs and cutters always lose their edge. If resharpened correctly on a lapping machine (blades) or a high-speed grinder (combs and cutters) the result is as good as new (often better). But blades, combs and cutters are easily damaged beyond repair by those without proper machines, methods and experience.

Most blades, combs and cutters are sharpened (and mailed) within 24 hours.

Trimming and Milking Stands

Restless animals don’t want to stand still and wait for you to clip or milk them. That’s why headpieces and stands that hold animals securely and comfortably are essential.

Premier’s stands are highly adjustable, so they fit all sizes of stock. Optional side-rails prevent ornery animals from falling off, and the ramp reduces effort and risk of injury to both animal and user. Each stand folds flat for easy transport, plus they’re hot-dip-galvanized for years and years of use.

  • Folding carry handle prevents legs being caught.
