The Craftsman
The story of the Pasture Wind Bell is a family story—one that began on the craggy Maine Coast in a small fishing village. Jim and May Davidson spent their days both on the water—Jim as a lobsterman—and on land—raising sheep on the small islands off the Maine coast. With countless hours spent on the Atlantic, surrounded by the sounds of the sea, the beautiful and haunting notes of the traditional harbor buoy bells and gongs inspired Jim to reproduce the unique tones as a wind bell. After carefully engineering his design, Jim took his idea one step further and created the Pasture Wind Bell – designed to reproduce the melodious and peaceful tones of sheep bells common on the Maine islands. Although Jim has retired, his daughter and their loyal crew still produce each bell by hand in the family’s extensive workshop, anchored proudly in Coastal Maine.
