Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep
By Paula Simmons and Carol Ekarius.
Storey's Guide to Raising Sheep is an invaluable resource for everyone who raises sheep. It contains the most comprehensive and current information available on:
- Breeds, including minor ones
- Feeding and housing
- Breeding and lambing
- Pasture management
- Diseases and health care
- Herding dogs
Why? Because they focus on fundamentals, have many illustrations and data, are not so long that they're offputting and are written in "laymen's language" for USA conditions by authors respected in their industry. Once you have a "Storey" sense of a species you can move to other books that address more specific aspects.
- Starting with Sheep
- Breeding and Breeds
- Pasture, Fences and Facilities
- Herding Dogs
- Predators and Protection
- Feeds and Feeding
- General Health Considerations
- Problems of Rams, Ewes, and Lambs
- Flock Management
- Products and Marketing
- Showing Sheep
- Records and Animal Identification
- Feed Requirements for Sheep
- National Animal Identification System

This is an excellent reference for any sheep producer. It is extemely helpful for anyone who raises sheep whether you are a novice or an experienced shepherd. This is the best book I have come across for all aspects of raising sheep for breeding, feeding, raising, troubleshooting, etc.
An excellent book that covers all the basics! I'd recommend it to anyone getting into sheep... and hang on to it for reference. I have just a handful of sheep books; this is one of them. Very clear, easy to read, great graphics and photos too.
