Solar powered 0.50 joule energizer.

“PRS-I” units (for “Intelligent”) are able to reduce their energy demand when the fence’s voltage is high—due to few weeds touching the fence.

This occurs in fall and winter for most fences and occurs all year for some horse, cattle and deer fences.

So an “I” unit’s battery is more likely to remain charged through the low sunlight days of autumn and winter.

  • 0.24 joules in dry soils.

Miscellaneous

  • Requires 1.5' of ground rod in the ground.
  • Draw from a 12v battery is 20-50 milliampere (mA) per hour (depending on weed-load). With this energizer a 12v 100 ampere hour, deep cycle battery* will last approximately 125 days on a clean or 50 on a weedy fence. *Assumes being drawn down to 40% between recharges.
  • 40 pulses per minute.

Should Power...

  • 1 mile of 3 strand cattle fence.
  • 1/2 mile of 5-7 strand sheep fence.
  • 6-164' Sheep/Goat nets or 2-4 164' Poultry Nets.
All distances are dependent of grass/weed load on the fence.

Benefits

  • To catch the sun's power in winter, simply lean it against a post. If you live in low-sun areas, do this in the late fall and early winter also.
  • Won't rust. It's UV treat plastic.
  • Plug-in battery recharger tops off the battery when the unit is not in use

  • How to Use

Attach the energizer unit to the battery and it is ready to use. Drive in the ground rod. Lay it on the ground or against a post. Then attach the earth clip to the ground rod and the fence clip to the fence. Switch it on (when switching on, make sure the button is pressed all the way in).

To use T-post & "T" ground rod mount: slide adapter over T-post or "T" ground rod. Slide unit onto adapter.

Winter Use—If you're not using your PRS unit during the winter follow these tips to preserve battery life:

    • Turn off the unit. Disconnecting the unit from the fence is not sufficient, the unit will still pulse unless it is turned off.
    • Clean off the solar panel. Dust and debris may have accumulated during use and as a result prevents the panel from maximum electrical production.
    • Before the unit goes into storage, fully charge the unit. This will allow the battery to be topped off. Batteries that are 50% or less charged may become damaged in freezing temperatures.
    • If possible, place the unit in a sunny area, this will allow the solar panel to continuously top-off the battery. The battery will lose charge over time even if the unit is disconnected from the fence and turned off.

If you're planning on using your PRS unit during the winter months, follow these helpful hints:

    • Face the energizer due South, this will allow the panel to receive the maximum amount of light possible during the low-light days of winter.
    • Instead of laying the unit on its back, stand up or prop up the unit (facing South) to allow it to receive as much light as possible.
    • Hang the unit up (facing South), secure the top and base to prevent the unit from moving. This will keep the unit out of most snow drifts and allow accumulated snow to fall off.
    • If the unit is not to be hung up, clear all debris off the panel, this includes grass clippings, dust (especially on gravel roads), leaves and snow. Do not place in shady areas, this will reduce light intake.

To use light tester WITHOUT ground probe

    For Fence:
    1. Touch the top of the tester to the electrified fence you wish to test.
    2. Push the button (if applicable).
    3. The tester will light up according to the voltage at that location on the fence.
    For Energizer:
    1. Turn off energizer.
    2. Disconnect ground wire and fence wire from energizer.
    3. Turn on energizer.
    4. Touch the top of the tester onto the top of the fence terminal on the energizer.
    5. Push the button (if applicable).
    6. The tester should light up to 6000 volts or more.

To use light tester WITH ground probe

    For Fence:
    1. Insert the probe of the tester into the soil.
    2. Remove your hand from the metal portion of the probe (to avoid a shock).
    3. To get a voltage reading, touch the metal clip (on the top of the tester) to the electrified fence you wish to test.
    4. The tester will light up according to the voltage at that location on the fence.
    5. Remove the tester from the fence and the probe from the soil. Do not remove the probe by pulling the insulated wire.
    For Energizer:
    1. Turn off energizer.
    2. Disconnect ground wire and fence wire from energizer.
    3. Turn on energizer.
    4. Touch probe from tester to ground terminal on energizer (be sure to hold onto the insulated wire and not the metal probe!)
    5. At same time touch the fence hook on tester to fence terminal on energizer.
    6. The tester should light up to 6000 volts or more.

    Troubleshooting

To determine if the fault is with the fence or the energizer...
    1. Test the energizer first
    2. Turn off energizer.
    3. Disconnect ground wire and the fence wire.
    4. Turn energizer back on.
    5. With fence tester, put the ground probe to the ground terminal on the energizer and the fence probe to the fence terminal. The reading you get tells you how well the energizer is working without any other variables. If there is a very low voltage (under 4000v) or no voltage, then the energizer may have a problem. If the voltage is high (greater than 4000v) then the trouble lies with your fence. Most energizers put out between 5000v and 8000v when there is no load (i.e. no fence hooked up).

If the energizer is faulty and you are using the Horizont energizer as a battery unit you need to learn if the battery or the energizer is the problem…

    1. If it's a 12 volt energizer carry the unit to a nearby vehicle and attach the input cords carefully to the vehicle's battery.
    2. If the energizer now works, then your fencer's battery needs to be recharged or replaced.
    3. If the energizer does not work, then you should call Premier re. repairs.
If the fence is at fault, then you must find the fault(s) and fix them. Here's how to start this process: If you have a Fault Finder you can simply touch the fence with the Fault Finder at various points along the electric fence(s). The Fault Finder will tell you at each point which direction to go in to locate the problem. Move in that direction testing as you go and you will arrive at the problem. Fault finders do not work well with detecting directional faults with electrified netting.
If you lack a Fault Finder…
    1. Walk or drive along the fence looking for any point in which the energized wires touch the soil, a steel post or a steel wire. On HT wire fences, check the wires at braces to see if they are touching a hot wire. On netting, look for a hot wire touching the metal stake at the bottom of the plastic posts. Also look for damaged insulators.
    2. If the fence can be separated into several parts (by switches or by disconnecting parts of it), you can locate the problem by beginning at the far end and then progressively turn off or disconnect the sections of fence. When the voltage on the remaining fence rises sharply, you've located the section(s) that's causing the problems.
    3. The alternative to (2.) is to begin at the fencer and progressively turn on sections of the fence. When the voltage suddenly drops you can assume that the problem is in the section most recently connected.

    About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

    Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

    Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

    Line Posts Compared
    1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
    2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
    3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

    * Not all fences have all line post options.

    About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

    Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

    How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

    * Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

    Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

    Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

    * Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

    Essential Energizer Advice

    • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
    • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
    • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
    • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
    • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
    • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
    • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
    • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

    Two Basic Types

    1. All-in-one Solar
      • Solar units are very portable.
      • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
      • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
      • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
    2. Plug-in & Battery
      • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
      • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
      • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
      • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

    Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

    What’s the benefit?

    1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
    2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
