Setting up a brooder…
06 HEAT LAMP & LAMP STAND

The brooder needs to be ready to use
before
the chicks arrive.
A brooder can be as simple as placing
bedding in the bottom of a cardboard
box, supplying food and water and
hanging a heat lamp.
The brooder
Brooders range from commercially
produced devices to simple homemade
cardboard houses. You can even utilize
an old metal or plastic stock tank as a
brooder. The brooder needs to be draft
free, have adequate ventilation and be
secure from predators.
Bedding
Bedding insulates the brooder floor,
helps keep the chicks dry and absorbs
moisture from their droppings. We use
pine wood shavings. Others use chopped
straw, shredded paper or old newspapers
(unshredded). Crushed corncobs, peat
moss, vermiculite and coarse sand can
also be used. Be sure to replace the
bedding often since the birds will soil it.
Clean bedding = clean chicks = healthy,
live birds. Dirty bedding = the opposite.
Red heat lamp bulbs or clear?
Clear bulbs provide more illumination.
Red bulbs provide slightly more heat.
Many feel that light from red bulbs
reduces the amount of pecking (on other
chicks). Both colors appear to work so
it’s a matter of personal preference as to
which one to use.
Regularly fluff the bedding to keep it from packing
down. Add fresh bedding to help keep the birds clean.

Customer Review…
Premier Heat Lamp
Great lamp! Works excellent for our baby
chicks. I have no fear of it falling apart like
our other one.

Heat lamp height
To help hang your lamp—see items
below.
Also see lamp stand on opposite page.
Begin with the heat lamp. It should be
18 inches above the bedding. If the birds
are evenly distributed throughout the
brooder the temperature is comfortable
for them.
If your chicks huddle in the middle
under the light—lower the lamp.
If the chicks are close to the outer edges
of the brooder but not under the lamp,
raise the lamp to lower the temperature
directly under it.
Feeding and watering
Chicks need constant access to food and
water. They grow rapidly and therefore
have high nutritional demands to support
the fast growth.
