• Keep waterers level. This enables the
internal floats to work properly—and
prevents water from running over onto
the floor and soiling the bedding.
• Clean them. Hard water or algae may
build up. Rinse waterers with soapy
water on occasion to reduce possible
bacterial growth. Make sure there are
no “suds” left after cleaning.
• Birds like to scratch near waterer—
which puts filth in the trough. To
reduce this elevate waterers and
drinkers so they’re as high as the base
of a bird’s tail.
• Place waterers for adult poultry onto
cinder blocks forcing the birds to hop
up to access the water.
• Waterfowl like to make mud holes near
their water source—so change the
waterer’s location frequently.
• When using a waterer/drinker outside,
do not place them in the sun as this
will cause increased evaporation and
reduce the amount of water available.
The size is dependent on the size of the
birds, the number of birds and how often
you are able to water them.
Pick a waterer that will provide enough
clean water for your birds between your
trips to the chicken coop.
If you have only a few birds or
frequently water them you can manage
with a smaller waterer. If you have many
birds you need a larger waterer.
How much water will a bird drink in a
day? A standard size adult chicken will
drink about 0.08 gal a day. Temperature,
size of bird, age and salt in the feed will
cause this figure to vary.
For chicks use a small waterer with a
drown-proof or narrow lipped base.
For waterfowl a wider base is important
so their beaks can fit into the tray.
If you dislike your waterer try one with
a different design. Some users prefer one
style over another.
