IntelliTest Digital Voltmeter

The IntelliTest Digital Voltmeter allows you to check the voltage at any location on your electric fence system. The tester operates on a 9V battery and automatically switches "on" and "off". It is capable of measuring pulses between 600 and 10,000 volts.

Common Uses

To test electric fence and trouble shoot an energizer.

Specs

  • Hard plastic body is 6 1/4" x 3 1/4" x 3/4"
  • 1" x 1.5" digital display
  • 4" ground probe
  • 64" ground cable
  • 9V battery included
  • Made in Germany by Horizont
Benefits

  • Gives an exact reading of volts on the fence line
  • Can test your ground rod and energizer

How to Use

To test the fence:

  1. Insert probe into the ground.
  2. Touch voltmeter clip to any conductive portion of the fence.
  3. Read the digital readout of volts. It is shown in kV (2.7 kV = 2700 volts).
  4. Remove voltmeter clip from fence, then gently remove the probe from the ground (do not pull the wire, only grab the metal probe to remove).
To test the energizer:
  1. Turn off energizer.
  2. Disconnect ground wire and fence wire from energizer.
  3. Turn on energizer.
  4. Touch probe from tester to ground terminal on energizer.
  5. At same time touch the fence hook on tester to fence terminal on energizer.
  6. The tester should light up to 6000 volts or more.

Precautions

Make sure to remove tester from fence and then pull out the ground probe.

Trouble Shooting

If your fence voltage is below 2000 volts or has diminished significantly from previous tests, perform the following steps to determine if the problem is your tester or your fence.

  1. Disconnect the fence from your energizer and test across the two terminals on the energizer. If the readout is higher that what you found when you tested the fence, the fence is the culprit. However, if the voltage readout remains suspicious, the problem may be with the voltmeter. Check the battery (see information below) before "giving up" on the tester.
  2. The internal battery can also affect the accuracy of the digital reading. If either of the following is observed, change the battery (remove the 4 screws on the back of the voltmeter to do so) and retest your fence.
    • The luminosity of the output reading becomes weak.
    • Voltage readings drop with each pulse (at the same fence location).

Because of its contrasting colors, this is the most visible narrow tape on the market. That's why it is so effective at stopping deer, horses and "spooked" cattle.
