Grain, Silage and Hay Feeder Plans

Why our hay and silage feeders please…

Why our feeders please…

  • Minimal waste. Panels prevent excess silage or hay from being pulled into the pen. Animals must work for each mouthful.
  • Less risk of injury from animals. Because entering the pen is not required even children can safely do the feeding.
  • Grain, silage and hay can all be fed in this feeder. Saves space and reduces the cost.
  • Save $$ You can use local lumber to make your feeders.
  • Proven. In use across the nation for years—and now even copied by our competitors. Of course, we've tweaked and improved the design along the way.

Two feeder designs…

  1. Single-sided - Ideal when you can walk along the bunks to fill with feed. Easy and safe to walk along these feeders to feed hay/grain and check the animals with no risk of being pushed or mobbed by the flock.
  2. Double-sided - Serves double duty by subdividing pens. Goats work for each mouthful of hay and kernel of grain, reducing waste and keeping them busy. Tight spacings prevent heads getting caught in the panels. We use treated wood for the legs because they contact the ground.

Use these two feeder panels to help build your own feeders…

Use the 24" x 48" Feeder Panel Insert for large sheep and rams. Holes are 4" x 6" to match the larger noses and needs of Suffolks, Hamps, Columbias, Dorsets and most rams. Note: This size is not as suitable for smaller sheep, lambs or goats because they can catch their heads in the holes.

Use the 30" x 48" Feeder Panel Insert for goats and sheep. Holes are 3" x 5" to match noses of goats and small to medium sheep breeds. Our preferred panel for our flocks (Dorper/Romanov/Katahdin). These panels continue to serve us well, even after many years of hard use. Panels are 30" tall. Therefore no plywood is needed at the top.

To help build your feeder, order Premier's Build Your Own Feeder Plan Booklet (Free with your panel purchase.) or download it. The download is located on the feeder plan booklet page under instructions/diagrams.
