Problems with Ear Tags

I have had problems this year with ear tags in my sheep getting infected. I disinfected the ear and the tag before putting them in. I never hit a vein and they look good. Then a few months later, the ear starts getting infected around the tag after they look completely healed and I've had to remove several tags. It's like the ear doesn't get air around the tag. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What breed of sheep are you tagging.
What type of tags are you using
Where in the US are you located.

I have Katahdins. I'm using the 2X tamper-proof tag. I'm located in south central Illinois.
