Gary,
I like to do it within the first 24 hours, if possible. If I'm there, I will usually tag our kids shortly after they nurse, so often within an hour of birth. Doing it shortly after birth prevents mix-ups and is less traumatic for the kids. But it can be done at whatever time is most convenient for you. When you tag those young kids, remember that their ears will end up much larger and keep your tag high up on the ear so it doesn't get caught in anything (I usually go about 3/4" to 1" from the base of the ear on my Boer kids). If you tag between the cartilage ridges in the ear, you shouldn't get any blood.
