predator issue

Any suggestions on how to keep what is possibly a weasel from getting through the poultry netting? The fence is fairly tight and level, on mowed ground and it is putting out a good zap. I'm assuming the critter is going through between the bottom strand and the first electrified strand, but don't know for sure as I've never seen it. We have a trap out now and are hoping to relocate him if we catch him, but I'd like to prevent this from happening again, ideally without having to build a new movable coop.

Sounds like you need a hot wire at ground level. Depending on how many feet of fence you have it should not be much trouble. If you don't already use steel post for your corners you might try it. With the steel post it is easy to put up one wire right where that weasel will find it. Since the post needs to be on the outside of the fence anyway this works well. Some insulators and wire is all you need and a jumper to your existing fence for power. This might be too much trouble for a portable fence but it will work.

What has possibly happened is that there is a small (2" or less) gap between the bottom string and the ground. The weasel has found this place and can actually slide under the net (because he is so small) without touching that first hot string. I would check the fence and find that low spot(s). You'll need to take a post or something to hold that bottom black string firmly against the ground to close off that gap. Try not to use metal landscape staples as you run a risk of the staples shorting out the fence.

Also try using plastic tent pegs to hold the bottom wire (black line, not electrified) down on the netting so the weasel can not lift up the netting to get under it.

Can you run a single wire inside the fence to help zap the chickens ? if so what size & type of wire should be used ?

You can run a wire on the inside of the fence. I would use a galvanized wire that is 14-16g.
