Primatech Auto Syringe/Drencher

I own the Primatech, bought it at a show. Now that I am ready to use it I have discovered that I don't seem to have the bottles that it is supposed to be able to hook into.

What kind of bottles should I be looking for? Is it a particular brand?

Also I was recommended by someone not to use it for vaccinating. They didn't like the fact that it wasn't cleaned between each sheep. How big of an issue is this?

Dear Julia: I have a similar automatic syringe and it seems to me that the draw off needle will puncture the rubber stopper on just about any vaccine bottle. It will probably take a little practice on your part to get it to work properly and not suck in air as you make each injection. I don't drench my sheep so I don't know what you would use there. As far as cleaning it between sheep, that would defeat the purpose of having an automatic syringe. My feeling is that all vaccinations should be made under the skin and not in the muscle so I don't know of any disease you could pass between sheep. The worse thing I can think of is a minor skin reaction at the injection site and that certainly isn't serious or fatal. The disease the vaccine will prevent is certainly far worse. The Jan. 04 issue of Progressive Farmer had a good article on vaccinations. The worse thing you can do is use alcohol, soap, bleach, or chemicals to clean your syringe. Use only boiling water at the end of the day. Anything else or traces of them will destroy the vaccines. Another thing they said was to never expose vaccines to sunlight or heat. Hope this helps. David

Hi, Julia

David is correct in that the syringe is made to be inserted into the rubber top of a drug bottle - included were two tops to fit both bottle sizes.

Some people like to use a clean needle for each animal; this could be done with the auto-syringe but would certainly slow you down, defeating the purpose. If you want to use a clean needle and aspirate (pull back to check for blood) then you would be better off using individual syringes.

Whether or not you use the sub-cutaneous or intra-muscular method depends on the medication - please follow the directions on the bottle.

Janet
