foal

We are breeding our 7 y/o Arabian/Oldenburg cross mare and once weaned will bring the foal home for at least two years.

Two questions: What fence system would you recomend for a young horse in a backyard? Not much wind unless there is a storm blowing through, relatively flat area, no water, no hazards.

Secondly, since horses are herd animals we will want to have a companion animal. Anyone have recommendations? Would fencing requirements change?

I would suggest using a stranded fence with either SW tape for visiblity around the top and then rope strands below or using the Intellitape all the way down if you are wanting something temporary. I would go 5 strands especially if it is a young foal.
As for a companion animal a goat is a great option! No matter if your horse is going to be in a stall or in a pasture a goat would work great! The fencing would stay the same when a goat is added to the picture.

Thanks, Kary Ann
