Hi,

I have 20 Gulf Coast, Gulf Coast/Ramboulliet crosses that I recently inherited and need to shear. Some of them have approx. 2-3 years worth of wool on them.

We are in southeast Texas where it is pretty humid and hot so I would like to leave a covering on to protect them from sunburn.

I have never sheared sheep before so would like to know what shears/clippers and blades you would recommend.

Hi

Because you are just starting to shear I recommend the Premier 3000c - a clipper. You can use the Merlin 13L blades to be fairly safe and leave some wool on the animals. You will probably want several pairs and be prepared to do them over two weekends with sharpening inbetween.

As you increase you skills (and possibly your flock) you may want to consider adding the shearing head at a later date.

Hi Janet,

I have a good friend who has a 3000s that she has offered to give me as she raises haired sheep now. Is this different clipper than the one you recommended? Would I be able to use this 3000s since I am a beginner? If so what blade would I use with it and if not I will be more than happy to purchase the 3000c.

Also, how do I clean and care for my blades? My friend said that she has always used your re sharpening service so I will also.

The "s" signifies that it has a shearing head rather than a clipping head. They can be more aggressive and a bit fussier to adjust correctly which adds to the stress of learning. If you do decide to use the shearing head I recommend the Spirit comb. However you can also purchase the clipping head ($85) and still use the blades I recommended before; this will allow you a less stressful learning curve....
