Starting fence lines

Hi,
I am about to start up a farm with little experience and will be starting with
chickens & Turkeys "true free Range" and then will be adding goats and horsemaybe some cattle as experience grows. (displaced urban cowboy) I have twenty seven acres total... all wooded except 4 which is dived into two two acre plots seperated by 200 feet of thick forest. ( no undergrowth) in western VA

I want to get a protective barrier to keep predators out more so than keeping the chickens in... I beleive they only travel a short distance of 100-200 feet from the coop.

i would like to know what would be the best inexpensive way to accomplish a protective field until money can be generated to expand. Money is currently scarce from a bad realtor

Thanks,

James

The typical way many do small area's is to use the electrified poultry netting. These systems are portable thus can be moved from site to site with relative ease. Multiple rolls can be connected together allowing for adjustable paddock sizing as needed. This portable type system offers very good predation protection as well as containment. The PoultyNet systems do require proper electrification in order to make them supply an effect charge to animals as well as cope with vegetative loads (shorting). When selecting an energizer weed loads, fence lengths, future expansion, and power supply (AC unit verses DC unit) are some of the items to be considered when selecting proper size unit.
The options for permanent usually will include a woven wire (your case requires a very close mesh woven for bird containment) as well as electrified wire for predation.
