any recommendations on how to test and safely charge a 12 volt wet cell battery with an elderly manual charger and without a volt meter? Any ground/earth rod installation recommendations too?

Testing of 12 volt batteries can be done with a Battery Charge Meter (part #125000) or with multi-meter electrical tester. A fully charged (100%) 12 volt battery will have a voltage measurement of 12.7-12.8 volts and a Zero (0%)charge with voltage at 11.9 volts. Deep cycle batteries should be recharged when voltage level is no lower than 12.3 volts (40% left). When measuring this voltage battery recharger should be disconnected and battery left idle for 1 hour before measuring to insure more accurate reading. If idle battery is measured over a period of days and has a continued voltage drop the battery may not be holding a charge and may need replaced. When charging batteries simple math needs to be used. Most deep cycle batteries have approximately 100 amp hours when recharging a battery that has 12.3 volts left in (60% battery used 40% left in) we need to replace that 60 amp hours that has been used. With most trickle chargers using a 2 amp setting this would result in 30 hours of recharging (if charging was 100% efficient) . Battery rechargers are not 100% efficient so the recharging time can be from 30-48 hours (variable dependant on battery and battery rechargers)

Thanks
Scott
