At the risk of sounding like a smart a.., I'll say, "read the label". The vaccine that I used a few days ago, says not to slaughter for "21 days" after use. It is a brand ("Colorado"), that I don't usually use, but it was available locally, so I didn't need to pay shipping on my usual brand "Covexin8". I understand that if the ewe gets a booster, about 30 days before lambing, the lamb will not need to be vaccinated at all if it is to be killed at a "young" age. I have heard lots of opinions about what the "young" age is, but I have seen no actual research on the subject.
It is an interesting subject, and I have other questions myself:
I last vaccinated with the Covexin8 a few years ago. Now that I have switched brands, do my older sheep get the 2 treatments 30 days apart with the new product, or the single treatment booster? Since a few of my younger sheep need the 2 treatments anyway, and it has been a few years, I plan to do them all twice with the Colorado product, but this is based on an uneducated hunch. Does anybody actually "know"?
What if I never get around to the second treatment after 30 days? Next time do the sheep get the one shot booster, or do I start fresh with the 2 shot routine?
