Electric Fence to keep out Black Bears
Author: Harvey Silberstein

I recently moved to Northampton Massachusetts, a city of 30,000, and had visions of growing berries and melons in my backyard garden. The problem is that there is a local population of Black Bears that raid gardens, compost bins, garbage pails, etc. I'm wondering if you have recommendations for fencing to keep them out of a 60ft by 60 ft garden space. i would like to have at least 2 gates in the fence system and run it by a solar recharged power source. This would be a permanent installation. Thank you for your help..

The first thing you need to do is make sure that you can put up any electric fence according to the local zoning laws. The ElectroNet 9/35/12 works great to keep bears out of gardens. We use where the nets meet as our gateways. You'll need extra step in posts at the corners for some added support. The Intellishock 20B solar package A would be a good energizer to use. I would also recommend a fence tester. wrote:

Thank you for the information. Would this spacing of wires also keep out rabbits, squirrels, skunks, groundhogs, etc. - other small animal garden raiders? If not is there another prefab fence that would serve both purposes ie Bears and small animals.
Thanks.

Hi Harvey,
The ElectroNet will not work well to keep out the small animals. You may want to look at the PoultryNet 12/42/3- item 201800. It has 3" vertical spacings, is 42" tall and has more horizontal wires so the openings are much smaller- 2" x3" at the bottom. You could also take a look at the VersaNet 11/30/3 (item #202900) - It is a 30" high net with the small spacings as well.
