I'm hearing popping sounds at several location on the poultry net fence that we are electrifying this for the first time. Is this normal or does it indicate shorts?

Millie,
The snapping sounds you are hearing are indicating a short. Usually the fence has brushed up against something metal (barn or T post) or it has sagged and is almost or just barely touching the ground. Every place that you hear that sound is a potential problem.
