Insulated Maxishock or 10/2UF?

I want to run three poultry nets off one charger--one central enclosure that doesn't move and two that rotate around, and the price of solar is a bit off-putting, and in Maine's climate a bit problematic.

It's 165 feet from the house, and electricity, to the poultry shed. I'm thinking of running a buried wire from the house, and wonder whether it would be better to run 165 feet of 10/2UF to an externally located energizer, or 165 feet of Maxishock from a charger located in the house?

Were you going to use conduit? If not, is the maxishock rated for direct burial (I don't think so)? That might decide the issue right there.

Then, have you priced it out both ways? If you run the Maxishock you still need to run two conductors and put the ground rod near the fence. So that is 230 feet of maxishock.

So, is it cheaper to buy 165 feet of 10/2 or 230 feet of maxishock? I'm guessing the maxishock will be more expensive.

Oh, one more thing. Maybe you can get away with 12/2. There shouldn't be much current flowing to the charger. That would be even cheaper than 10/2.

I know if it were me I wouldn't consider running high voltage wires underground because it just plain makes me nervous.

Hi James,
If you run the doulbe insulated maxi cable you can put it under ground alone. You do not need to run two wires. The ground rod can be back at the energizer.

I use the insulated Maxi shock on a reel to move power on a temporary basis. I just unspool along the ground and hook up. I have the first 5 or 6 inches on the reel stripped and sticking out of the edge of the reel. I just put the reel on the ground or hang it from a post (with the Premier1 hanger), and use a short bit of insulated maxishock to run from the reel (the short stub I have sticking out of the side of the reel) to the the fence that needs to be electrified. Obviously if the reel is on the ground, I keep it on the non sheep side of the fence. It is very easy and fast, because I just unreel the amount of insulated Maxishock needed. I don't remember how much the reel holds, and it was not listed in the catalog, but when I called Premier, I was told how much insulated Maxishock to order, to fit each size reel.

I like to use the XL EzeReel and put 500' of the MaxiShock insulated wire on it.
With the larger reel I do not need to keep the wire as tight to fit it on.
