Intellishock battery charge

I have an intellishock 20b with 12v battery, no solar panel.
Two questions:

1) As the battery discharges will i see a drop in the voltage on the battery and if so how low can i let the voltage go without damaging the battery?

2) Will I need to disconnect the battery from the energizer before hooking up to my trickle charger?

A battery should not go below 40% or it will not hold its memory.

Always disconnect the battery from the energizer before charging on a battery charger.
