There are a variety of software programs developed for tracking livestock management. The one I use is very easy - you can download a free demo at www.magnumdigital.com and see what you think before you buy it. There are many other programs out there; a quick web search would probably find most of them. Much depends on what type of information it is most important to you to track.
The only way I know of to take a small version to the barn would be if you have one of the palm-top computers. Since I don't have a small enough computer, I usually print out a form or spreadsheet for the specific project I have in mind and take it to the barn on a clipboard, then transfer it to the computer when I get back to the house.
