Heat lamp

I have several Premier heat lamps. My problem is trying to open the cage covering the bulb to replace the bulb. I am unable to squeeze the two pieces together enough to open the cage. If I use a screw driver to help, I end up breaking one of the tabs. There must be an easier way to be able to squeeze the tabs together to open the cage.
