Shearing an Angora with A5 clippers

I just acquired my first Angora, and she's 3 months overdue for a shearing (I live in San Diego, so it's not too cold.) I have an Oster A5 clipper. What blades would be right for shearing her? She is fairly matted, and her fleece is quite dirty in places.

It will be extremely difficult to shear your Angora (I'm assuming Goat, not rabbit) with the A5. It simply isn't strong enough. If you don't have access to a stronger set of clippers or shearers I recommend using Hand Shears or as a last resort scissors if necessary. The smaller clippers just won't handle the matts or the dirt...

What is the best larger clipper/shearer for someone with just a few Angoras to clip? You are absolutely right that the A5 won't do the job, but I don't really want to spend $300.00 for another clipper.

If you want to use a clipper you could go with either the Premier 800c ($195 plus blades, approx $40) or the Premier 3000c ($289). They are pretty close in price, so I would make your choice based on future use - if you are going to get more animals, go with the 3000c.

Unfortunately there really isn't a less expensive motorized option.

Something you may want to consider is using hand shears. I have done a flock of 30 sheep with them, but spread it out over the course of several weeks. For that I would recommend the B&B MiniTrims. Their size makes them easy to handle and its much easier to see where you are cutting with the shorter tips.
