lamb warming boxes

Anyone have a good idea on how to make a warming box for chilled lambs that is safe and won't burn the barn down? Appreciate your ideas.

I have always been going to build one, but never have. I just use a feed sack and a hair dryer. I usually leave the lambs head out, if possible, so the ewe can still see / touch the lamb while in the sack. The drawback is you have to stay with the lamb if you leave her with the ewe. Usually only takes 5-10 min unless they are excessivly chilled. I have used two / three sacks with twins / trips. Alternating between sacks to warm them up.

I made a heater last year that worked pretty well for 3-4 lambs. When we used to raise hogs, we would use heat mats. These mats come in various sizes. I one we used was 2' by 4'. The mats plug into a standard 120 volt outlet. They are made to be laid directly upon flooring used in a hog building, no straw. So what I did was raise the mat the thickness of a 2" by 4". I made a frame work out some lumber to keep the mat off the floor. The lambs would lay on it all day long. After a while we would unplug the mat during the day and only turn it on at night. The lambs laid on whether it was on or off. Hope that helps.

You can get plans for this from your local ag college or extension office. Some
times they are free or they might have a small charge for them.

I use a steel 55 gal. barrel with one end cut out and a hole in the opposit end to sit a heatlamp on. Cut a hole in the side for lambs to enter. I tie the barrel & lamp so it will not get tipped over.

We use a heat lamp about 3 to 4ft off the floor with a dark colored towel or blanket under the lamb. We always dry the lambs with towels, and rub them to stimulate them. I usually give either the Lamb drench or nutridrench and attempt to suckle them with a bottle of colostrum from the Ewe. In three years we have only lost one lamb to chill, the Ewe lambed early, walked away from the lambs, and we did not find her until the lambs had been on the ground for over 2 hours. We salvaged two of the three she had with this method. This has worked well for us. We currently have 3 ft of snow on the ground and have not lost any others to this point.
