I am interested in some sheep for their fiber . Some of the breeds that I am interested in are Blue- faced Leicester, Border Leicester, Columbia, Coopworth, Cormo, Corriedale, Montadale, Rambouillet, and Romney. Which would be great family pets, friendly, hardy and produce great wool. Any expierences would be great, Kristi

You have listed a very wide variety of sheep breeds - in nature, size and fiber type. I think all would be happy to be "pets". If you haven't already, I would recommend getting a raw fleece from each breed and see how you like working with it. Also consider the breeds' backgrounds; if they come from/were bred for an area with the same type of climate as you have you will have less health problems.

An excellent source for information such as you are seeking is this book:

In Sheep's Clothing : A Handspinner's Guide to Wool
by Jane Fournier, Nola Fournier

I found it to be a great source of information when I was deciding on a breed.

I would also recommend visiting breeders in your area and see how they are to work with. You will some things that are very breed specific but you will also find a lot of variance within breeds.

Have fun!

Janet

Have you looked into the Jacob Sheep? They have wonderful personalities, great hand spinners fleece, beautiful coloring, and are very hardy. Check out www.jsba.com for information about this rare breed.

Hand Spinners in this area really like Polypay wool for spinning.
