Goat Fence

We are ready to put up a fence and buy some goats to help us clean up about 5 acres. Problem is we know nothing about fence. Could you make some recommendations about the right kind of fence to buy? We want it to hold the goats without completely draining our bank account.

Hi, Bob

You have lots of options and I need a bit more information before I can make much of a recommendation. How long do you want the fence to last? What is the danger level if the goats get out? (go to the "back forty" or place "chicken" with a school bus?) What is your budget? The acreage does not necessarily give me the length of fenceline. How much fenceline (in feet) do you want to put in immediately? How much can wait for future investment? And, last but obviously not at all least, what is your budget, both financial and labor?

O.K., I want the fence to last forever-or as close to it as I can get. There would be no real danger if the goats get out since our house is more than 1/2 mile from pavement in any direction. We would like to be able to put in about 800-1000 feet immediately. The rest could wait if need be. The budget... of course cheaper is better...

A "forever" goat fence would be high tensile woven wire with a couple of off-set hot wires. It is also the most secure. Unfortunately, this is also the most expensive fence to put in; but at least you only have to do it once... http://www.premier1supplies.com/fencing.php?mode=detail&fence_id=78 will give you all the details on this type of fence.
