Sheep Tags

Dear Premier,

I cannot decide what tags to buy. I want them small but I want them to stay in as well. I have a small flock so I see the sheep up close and do not need the tags for my own personel identification but rather for records and such.

The new 2XTe tags would be the best choice for you. They are not too large and are
made to stay in better than the old ones.

Try the SNAP tags! We apply these to our lambs when they are still in the jugs. We select 2 colors, one for the ram lambs and the other for the ewe lambs. Makes it easier for sorting.

Since starting using these tags we have NOT lost any, and they have lasted until the males have gone to market. IF you should happen to apply them too tight once the ear has grown, simply snip the loop. Some of the ewe lambs have had theirs break where they "bend" around the ear but they should not fall out. We will give them a regular tag when we finally select them after breeding (or maybe not until they have lambed). The biggest plus in our books is that we have had almost no infections, unlike the darn metal ID tags that they want us to use in Canada.

Another plus......... cheap as borscht and lots of neat colors. They might not always be easy to read, but should work excellent for your needs.
