fencing around curves
Author: Lynn Fahrmeier

We have a sheep operation in west central Missouri. For the past 8 years preditors have not been a problem, but this year bobcats, coyotes, and wild dogs have found our flock. I have been reluctant to build a lot of woven wire fence, but that is changing.

My main concern and henceforth my question is this. Most all of my fences will be build alongside of grassed waterways or timber edges that have long curves. How do you build and support the fence around these curves? I realize that Tee post are out of the question but I have concerns that even wooden post spaced every 25 ft would eventially lean with the strain of HT woven wire.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

The easiest way is to set your posts at a slight angle so that the pull of the curve
tries to straighten them. Some people also put a short piece of treated 2 x 6 below
ground to help support the post.

Lynn,

Woven wire is an excellent choice, however I would be very reluctant to place woven fence lines within flood zones or below 50 year high water marks.

When you say "timber edges that have LONG curves".., how long of a curve (degrees of arc) in how many feet? 50 feet, 500 feet? 5,000 feet?

Be safe. Sincerely,

The best thing to do to try to help prevent leaning is to burry the post at least 4 feet in the ground. A lot of people think if they put a huge post in the ground 2 feet it will last forever. A 3 wire HT fence could pull that out within 1-2 years. Good luck!
