ground rod connection

Do you have to connect ground rod to wire with special connectors? or can I just wrap the wire on the top of the post and through the hole on the spike?

Also, the fence doesn't have to be in a complete circle (say you use it in a larger field as a cross fence), so what do you do with the opposite end that the fence is charged from?

You should always use a clamp to make a tight connection. A stainless steel
hose clamp will work.
At the opposite end you just tie it to an insulator.

I was at the fence clinic put on by the local New England Premier dealer a few weeks ago. It was demonstrated to us how important the ground is. Minor changes to the ground made major changes to the voltage in the fence. I came away with the opinion that enough grounds with tight connections are vital.
