rain and low voltage on netting

I'm currently free ranging poultry (chickens) on pasture using a Intellishock 20b charger with 9 volt dry cell and 2 rolls (164 feet each) of your poultry net. I've noticed a signifcant drop in voltage during wet conditions. For example, yesterday the fencing was charged at 4500 volts and yet during the evening in a rainstorm it will drop below 2000 volts. I've tried using step in posts to support the net in-between the built in posts which helps to limit weed load. Voltage does re-bound in dry conditions. Any ideas?

Bryan,
It sounds like that you have a fair amount of grass touching the netting. When the grass is dry, it does not take much if any current off of the fence. When the grass is wet, it will take more current off the fence so that your overall voltage drops. Something I've found helps at home is to secure the corner posts to something a little heavier so the end/corner posts don't lean as much. The more upright they are, the less sag you will have throughout the fence usually.
