I put on long pants and use a string trimmer. The reason for the long pants is that I use the trimmer to get right down to the dirt and rocks and dirt kick up a bit. This way, it takes a while for the grass/weeds to come back. Once we get past spring, growth is fairly slow anyway. Also, after a couple of years, the dirt under the fence gets pretty hard from doing this.
I also turn off the power before doing it in case I need to lift the wire and/or the trimmer hits it.
We try and avoid toxins on our property whenever possible.
We use the old TensionNet. I wish that would come back so we as it worked well with this method.
