Rabbits and ElectroStop

At our winter farm I am having issues with wild Rabbits chewing through the bottom black non-conductive poly strand. This is happening several places along the length of each net. Does anyone have ideas on how to engineer a better solution that does not involve wrapping metallic along the bottom strand of each net?

I have fixed a few of these breeches in the net by tying in some extra cord which closes the two open ends of the black bottom strand that the Rabbit created. But...it is not a very good solution as it does not prevent it from happening again.

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff,
Make sure that the rest of the net is hot all the time as well- if it is electrified then the rabbits should bump into the first hot strand when they're trying to chew through the bottom strand.

The other thing to consider is that it may not be rabbits chewing through the strand. Mice will also chew through it on occasion and they are so small that they are very unlikely to touch that hot wire.

You are repairing it correctly, but we do not have a good way of preventing it from happening again.

We run our fences pretty hot 24/7. The minimum voltage is 4.6k with a punch of 2.5 joules. Our fences only get that low during this time of the year when dew, frost and rain are present. When there is no rain during the day and after the grass has dried, the voltage is 7 - 9 k. Ground rods show a voltage of .500.

I suspect the Rabbits try to push through the fence at first, once they get zapped, they back out and find the bottom cord is not hot so they go to work on that. I say it is Rabbits doing the damage. I have never caught one in the act so I can not be sure of the suspects. We do have lots of them around and evidentially I am fencing them out of their turf.

Perhaps you could send this along to product design so they could have something to add to a new product in the future. It would be great to have a non-conductive bottom strand that is critter proof while not being hot.

Thanks

Jeff

Jeff,
It sounds like you have some pretty determined rabbits around there. I will be glad to pass this on to product development. We always welcome feedback. Please keep us informed if you come up with something yourself and/or if you catch the culprit in the act.
