Testing elec. poultynet.

How do you check a poultynet with a meter & how would find a short in the fence.
I have 164 ft. of poultynet didn't use all 164 ft. so ran the leftover back the other way does it matter if the fence touching each other ? Will it sort out ? Just bought the a fence couple of weeks ago, seems like it works & don't work. I notice when i first hooked it up when 1 chicken hit it, it got zaped !, but if they all charge at once it seems nothing happens. I have laying hens,broilers,2 turkeys they act like they never get feed so when they see me they all charge the fence almost pulling it down. I have the p? 50 solar eng. hooked too it, notice when first hooked it up could hear a clicking noise from it don't hear it now ! Black wire on ground rod red on metal clip on fence red light on at on & off switch the red light is flashing on the unit inside the box is that correct ? If ya had a sort in the wire somewhere how would ya find it ? Looks like i have too put extra poles in between the post too keep it from sagging all the time when they rush the fence. Could i use 1/2" pvc pipe for the post ?
Any info. or diagram for testing would help !

Thank You !
Where would ya start testing

Tim,
Start testing at the PRS without the fence hooked up. Take your fence tester and stick the probe in the ground. On the back of the tester, towards the top is a metal loop. Hook the red clip coming off of the PRS to that loop. What you should see is at least 4 of those lights lit up. If you don't get that many lights, we probably have something wrong with the energizer/battery. On the fence, the loop at the top of the tester is looped/touching the fence and the little probe is stuck in the ground. Here, we want at least 3500v on the fence.
If that isn't happening, you probably have a short on your fence. 2 main things to look for are 1) the posts- make sure (especially the end posts) that the bottom white strand has not slipped off of the plastic and down around the metal spike, 2) The bottom white strand cannot lay and touch the ground. We also want to keep the grass touching the fence to a minimum- it doesn't have to be perfectly clean, but each blade of grass that touches the fence takes away a little bit of energy and when you add moisture (rain or dew) the energy loss goes up.
Yes, you can use 1/2" PVC to help prop up the fence- anything Fiberglass or plastic will work as extra support rod. You may also be able to put just a bit more tension between the existing posts by pressing your foot against the metal spike. This will help take out some of the sag as well.

Thanks Mandy for the quick reply ! I don't have a fence tester like the ones you sell, can you use a mult. meter too do the testing ? If so do i set the meter over 3500v stick the black probe in the ground & clap the red clip on too the red probe, will that work ? I olny had the PRS for 2 weeks now ! hope nothing wrong with it, i have it sitting on a milk crate solar panel faceing straight up, is that okay ? I wipe the dust off every day too keep the panel clean !
Does the PRS send out pulses or a cont. charge ? I had too use some string through the top strand too help hold the top from sagging will that effect the charge ? No answer about the extra fence touching each other, taking thats okay ? Just trying too get pointed in right dir. before i start testing.

Thank You !

Tim

A multi meter won't work correctly. You need to have a tester that is designed for use with electric fences. They work similar- put the probe in the ground and touch the red clip to the loop at the top of the tester. Sitting on a milk crate is fine. The PRS pulsates- it will put out approximately 1 pulse every second. As long as the string you used is not metal it will not affect the net. Extra fence touching each other is fine.
