foxes and polywire

I need a 2nd level of protection for my free range chickens. Currently have deer fence around property but a craft fox still gets in.

Curious what heights I should put my polywire as well how much juice I should give it. I live in CT and there is a fair amount of vegetation in one area that would have polywire.

Thanks.

If you truly want to keep out a fox then you need 6 wires total for a combined height of about 40 inches. The suggested spacing in inches is 2-6-6-8-8-9. The first, third, and fifth wires should be grounded to make it really effective when the ground is frozen. You asked.

Premier has VersaNet and PermaNet which should keep out most fox and would be easier to move than the above design.

You do not decide how much juice to give the wires. That is determined by by your choice of energizer and the electrical resistance of you fence and the weed load.

To maximize your juice you need to mow down the weeds where the fence will go and ideally keep the weeds off of your fence. Weed load, to some extent can be countered with a more powerful energizer. If you use a metal wire for the lowest one you will be able to use a weed whacker on it after the fence is up. Some will use an herbicide.
