No charge in fence

Equipment: Intelishock 20B, 12v/12amp batter, Solar panel, poultry net, and/or versanet, and 6 light fence tester.

Problem: Energizer and battery seem fine. When I test energizer/battery with tester I get 4-5 lights. Red light on front of Intelishock blinks. As soon as I hook it up to poultrynet or versanet, I get one light or nothing at all. Red test light in back of energizer blinks suggesting fault in fence. Red light in front does not blink.

Troublshooting: No flaws or damage to fences. Netting not caught on stakes. Grass is short. Some sagging in netting due to minor undulations in ground, but nothing significant. Tried netting so no strands are touching ground as well, but no change. Ground clip hooked to energizer bracket. Alligator clips and all contact points are clean without corrosion.

Observations: Energizer was on and clipped to fence when I knelt next to energizer to see if light was flashing. My hands were on the earth about two feet away from ground stake and I could feel intermittent shocks.

Thanks, Ian

Firstly, try a digital fence checker for a more accurate and reliable reading.

It sound to me like your fence is grounded somewhere. This is easy to do and will give the symptoms you describe. With metal post it is typical for the fence to be grounded to the post. Where wire is used to install insulators, it is possible for a ground to occur where the wire touches your conductor or a tree or both. All of these conditions will cause your voltmeter to read zero or close to it. It can be grounded through the post or tree which is some how connected to your fence.
