Watering chickens in winter when it freezes
Author: Robin

Hello, any suggestions on how I can keep my hen waterer from freezing up this winter? I got it from P1... It is several gallons with a red tray and red top which is removed to fill it. Can't remember what it is called. Also, any advice on whether a particular hose pe holds up better in winter, hooking and unhooking it. Thanks!

I have the same question. I have a 540012 Combination 3 Waterer (0.8 /3 qt). I'm concerned that it will crack if the water freezes overnight (temps here can get to 0 F). Should I switch to a galvanized waterer? I don't have power in my coop.

Hi John,

Thank you for contacting Premier 1 Supplies! It would be possible for the plastic to crack as the waterer is not meant to freeze. Expanding water can certainly cause it to breakdown and effect the integrity of the product over time if you do have power in the coop. Also, the thawing/breaking of ice can be hard on the waterer. I would suggest using a heated waterer or a galvanized waterer for winter uses.

I hope this helps answer your questions!
Have a great day,
Andrea
