fence chargers & grounding
Author: Christiaan Zegstroo

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm new to this. Can more than one fence energizer be attached to a grounding system? I'm lazy and if I don't have to pound in more posts and bury more cable I'd be very happy.
Thanks,
Christiaan

Never attach more than 1 energizer to a ground rod system. This can cause back feeding into units that can/will cause damage and a failure to 1 or more units. Also keep grounding rods 30' - 40' away from any other grounds.

What would be the best fence to use for a) garden area- 42" high to keep out
cattle, horses, rabbits, and dogs; b) more than 42" for horses to keep out dogs.
Thanks, Gary.

The best product for rabbits and dogs is the electrified netting. However, we don't recommend using it for horses as it is easy for them to catch a hoof on/in it. It does work well for cattle.

To keep dogs out of the horse paddocks you can use several strands of one of the rope (make your choice dependent on longevity of product) - then put a strand or two of the IntelliTwine (less expensive than the rope products, don't need the visiblity since you already have the rope there) in the lower "gaps" between strands to stop the dogs.

So what should one do if they have 2 energizers on 1 pole (short of running a ground line 30' away)?

I have PoultryNet (328') and TensionNet (492') fences close 2 each other and am using 2 110 volt ac energizers (one for each fence). I use a hotshock 150 for the TensionNet and an Intellishock 284 for the PoultryNet. Since the PoultryNet is much more likely to short out against vegitation, I wanted its power supply separate. I was also concerned about hooking 2 independent wires onto the fence terminal of the energizer.

Thanks,
Barry

To do it correctly you do need to run one of the ground systems 30' away to separate the grounding fields and potential interference between the 2 units. Connecting more than one lead wire to the fence terminal (going in 2 different directions) is no problem.

Thanks
Scott
