Protein

We have about 30 weaned lambs we are feeding. We feed a "Barn Mix" that has 10% protein, because it is cheaper and we are trying to get them fat. But don't I need to had a little more protein for growth? I have tryed to add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per 5gal bucket of Soybean meal to up the protein but I think it is too hard on them because they started getting the runs so we stopped. Is there a gentler, cost effective, way to add some protein or is the 10% they are getting from the barn mix enough. when we are about 60 days from the first show we change to the more expensive show lamb feed but don't they need more protein eairlier? any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Cindi

Premier lacks experience in preparing lambs for show - and thus would respectfully decline to reply. Perhaps you might wish to post your query on the Breeder's World forum?

Thank you,

Dear Cindi: I looked in my sheep production handbook and it said that 44 lb. early weaned lambs should have 16.8 - 17.3% crude protein in their diet for moderate to rapid growth potential. I don't know how big your lambs are but even big lambs appear to need 13 - 14% protein. SBM is the cheapest way to add protein but your barn mix sounds a little too cheap. Is there any place that sells a complete lamb grower ration? David
