One of the Black Hills Stock Show’s most popular events is the Ranch Rodeo. Over $21,000 worth of cash and prizes are awarded to teams from the five-state region competing for top honors. This year’s event will be presented at the James Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds.
Teams are comprised of four people, who will compete in three preliminary events for the chance to make the finals Tuesday night at 7:30 pm. Preliminary events include the Steer Loading: contestants will load selected stock cattle into a stock trailer located in the center of the arena. The second event includes the range doctoring; teamwork of two horseback ropers, one teammate on the ground and a designated “doctor”, must sort out selected cattle, herd them across a time line, rope them and give them a simulated vaccination. The last preliminary event includes the stray gathering; four horseback riders must rope two preselected steers and tie a bottom and front legs up on both head of cattle.
All events are centered around common ranching practices that all the contestants engage in everyday life on a working ranch.
Applications for the event will be ready the first of January for this great event at the Central States Fairgrounds.
