It depends on which tester you have as to how they work. Most have a loop or metal piece at the top of the tester. This is the positive part. You need to touch that part to the tape- the metal strands in the tape are usually woven throughout the tape. On the bottom of the tester is a long insulated wire with a metal probe, this is the ground part. You stick that metal piece in the ground. When that is done, you should get a reading on the tester. Some testers have LED lights (like out 6 light tester-134100) that give a range instead of an exact reading. Others like the Digital Volt Meter (132000) give an exact reading. Both work just fine, it's just that 1 is more detailed than the other.
