Ear Tags for USDA Scrapie Eradication Program
USDA Scrapie Eradication Program
Regulatory Program
To comply, producers must insert an official tag in an ear of show sheep and goats, sheep and goats over 18 months of age, and intact sheep and goats under 18 months of age not moving into slaughter channels prior to leaving their farm of origin/birth.
There are exemptions for some types/classes of sheep and goats. Registry or official USDA flock ID tattoos may also be used. Rules vary a little from state to state. (See www.eradicatescrapie.org for more details.)
The tags enable officials to identify the place of birth of older sheep and goats whose brains, post slaughter, are diagnosed with scrapie. The tags also assist in locating the live animals born on a premise that produced an animal diagnosed with scrapie.
For all sheep and goats in the USA:
- Cost of tags: Paid by producer. Contact your state APHIS office at
1-866-USDA-TAG to change information on an existing scrapie flock number or to obtain a scrapie flock number. - Tag options: Q-flex® 1.5, Q-flex® 3 and Q-flex® 5, 7X and Mini. Color is up to you (except blue, which is reserved for USDA use).
- Imprinting: Male side has up to 2 lines of imprinting of the producer's choice. Female side has official flock number and a unique animal ID number.
- Usually shipped within 2–3 working days of placing order. Delivery date depends upon method of shipment.
Volunteer Scrapie Flock Certification Program (SFCP)
USDA’s scrapie flock certification program provides buyers of breeding stock with assurance that the seller’s sheep (if they’re enrolled in the program) are less likely to have scrapie. Those who voluntarily enroll in this program are in compliance with all regulatory rules.
- Cost of tags: Paid by producer.
- Tag options: Q-flex® 1.5, Q-flex® 3 and Q-flex® 5, 7X and Mini. Color is up to you (except blue, which is reserved for USDA use).

When ordering scrapie tags, please make sure to put your flock/scrapie number on the order with individual tag numbers.
