How does a heating plate work?
How does a heating plate work?
The underside of the plate is heated—the chicks go under the plate and touch their backs to it. This simulates how a mother hen keeps her chicks warm.
Heating Plate Starter Kits are an essential item to get your flock off to a good start and simplify your purchasing decisions.
Worried that the plate feels hot to the touch?
It isn’t. If chicks get too warm, they can and do move out from under it. Don’t overcrowd—chicks won’t be able to move away if they get too warm. Leg design allows you to adjust height of plate. It should just touch the backs of chicks. As chicks grow, raise the plate. If still concerned about the heat, the Heating Plate Temperature Controller adjusts the plate’s output.
Advantages Over Heat Lamp
- Uses less electricity. 15–66 watts/hr!
- Less risk of fire because of lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
