How does a heating plate work?
It is just the right temperature for chicks!
The heating plate's warm underside is preset to the right amount of heat for chicks, ducklings, goslings, poults, keets, and other young poultry to go under and touch their backs to it. This simulates how a mother hen keeps her chicks warm.Chicks require more warmth than us humans, and if they get too warm, they can and do move out from under the plate for a time. Chicks need to have space to move around as they like, so don't overcrowd the plate. The leg design allows you to adjust the height of the plate, so it just touches the backs of the chicks.
As the chicks grow, you can raise the plate. If you're still concerned about the heat, the heating plate temperature controller adjusts the plate’s output between 20% - 100% of full output.
The rugged plate cover (optional and sold separately) is a simple solution to a common problem. Chicks quickly discover the ability to hop and climb, resulting in a manure covered heating plate. A domed heating plate cover eliminates the hassle of cleaning dirt and droppings from the top of the heating plate.

Heating Plate Starter Kits are an essential item to get your flock off to a good start. A poultry brooder is where they will spend the first few weeks of life.Advantages over Heat Lamps…
- Uses less electricity! Only 15 watts (66 for the larger plate) vs 175 or 250 watts for a heat lamp.
- Less risk of fire because of lower surface temperature (only 125°).
- Field observation: Birds raised under plates appear more calm than those raised under lamps.
