Raddle Powder
Product Details
When applied to the chest of a ram, makes bright, long-lasting marks to easily identify which ewes have been bred.
Benefits:
- Container reseals, so there's no waste
- Works in all seasons and temperature ranges
- Requires no adjustment, less hassle than a breeding harness
Specs
- 3.3 lb container
- 3 colors: red, blue, and green
How to Use
When using mineral oil: Mix 2 parts powder to 1-1/2 parts of mineral oil into a thick paste.
Use OB gloves (to help keep your hands clean) and rub paste into the lower neck/brisket. Apply fresh raddle to brisket every 2 to 5 days. Wool or hair growth of 2 to 3 months on the brisket helps to absorb/release the paste.
Precautions
- Usually takes more than one application. More messy than a breeding harness.
- Marks are NOT always scourable—particularly if vegetable oil is used.
- It is difficult to remove all of the raddle from the animal’s chest in order to change colors mid-season. If you plan to switch colors, go bright to dark or green/red/blue.
- Raddle works best with wooled breeds of sheep. The fiber of hair sheep and goats does not hold the raddle as efficiently as wool.

I have used product for many years. I find it easier to use than crayons, a lot less expensive. Can mark 4 rams for same price as 1 using crayons.

Love this product. I mix it with shortening in a ziplock bag by kneading the outside of the bag. I then snip the corner off the bag and pipe it onto the Rams chest as if it were frosting. Works great. For show sheep we use hair savior by Sullivan's show supplies to remove it.

Very easy to mix and use. Really the paint washes off hands pretty easily so if you for get the rubber gloves don't panic.

The product is easy to mix and apply. Obviously it's a little messy if you are used to marking crayons. I use this on my buck because the marking harness was such a PitA and he eventually ended up destroying it. It has to be re-applied frequently. I would like it a lot better if it actually made my does go into heat and got them bred!

I have never used a breeding harness before, so I cannot say whether or not this is better. However, I can attest to this powder's ease of use. It washed off my hands very easily (my rubber glove split open on the second ram, so my hand go totally covered with it). I hope that it comes out of the wool as easily as it did my hands because my poor ewes have it all over their bodies - any place that the amorpus ram has brushed up against. I used vegetable oil so that it would wash off more easily. Perhaps transfer would be less with mineral oil, but doubt it.
