High-Tensile Smooth Wire
Product Details
New! 12.5 gauge smooth wire for general fence applications. Bekaert high-tensile wire is good choice for farmers and ranchers who need a reliable, long-lasting fencing solution.
- Corrosion-resistant—Class 3 galvanization resists rust up to 3x longer than generic farmstore fence wire
- Exceptional strength—Made from high-carbon steel, high-tensile wire offers superior resistance to breaking and sagging
- Safer for livestock (vs. barbed wire)—smooth surface reduces the risk of injury, making it ideal for cattle and other slow-moving animals
To keep the wire coil contained and to prevent unraveling, use a Wire Dispensing Jenny.

Common Questions
- What does “PSI” indicate?
- “PSI” stands for “pounds per square inch,” a unit of measurement used to indicate the wire’s tensile strength (e.g. how much force it can withstand before breaking.) A high PSI value is stronger and less prone to elongation over time. However, it’s less pliable and more difficult to work by hand. Specialized tools may be required.
- Can I electrify high-tensile steel wire?
- While it is not as conductive as copper or aluminum, steel can still carry an electric charge over long distances when used with a suitable electric fence energizer. Galvanized steel is designed to withstand tough weather conditions and is a good choice for permanent boundary fences over large areas.
- Which electric fence wire is right for me?
- High-tensile fences have a higher upfront cost, often requiring strong wood or steel posts and sometimes a contractor for installation. Plan on periodic tension adjustments and extra bracing.
Low-tension conductors, such as ropes, braids and electric netting, are easier to install and more economical. However, they are NOT physically strong. Rather, they rely upon pain and the animal’s memory. When properly energized, animals quickly learn that touching the fence is painful and will then avoid it.
- Is high-tensile wire fencing safe for fast-moving animals?
- Permanent wire fences are less forgiving than low tension electric fence conductors. For this reason, we recommend that horse owners use a coated wire or a semi-permanent electrifiable polywire to reduce the risk of injury.
