Benefits

A reliable Heated Poultry Waterer for all seasons.

  • Lid is secured to the base via unique interlocking tabs
  • Conical lid shape to prevent birds from perching and soiling waterer
  • Insulated lid traps warmer air inside waterer
  • Handle can be used for both carrying and hanging
  • Detachable 16' electrical cord for more flexibility without using extension cords. If you must use an extension cord, use a heavy-duty outdoor extension cord that is rated for a minimum of 1 amp (100 watts) continuous draw.
  • Built-in thermostat turns heating element on at 40°F and off at 60°F. Note: Water in the basin does NOT get hot, nor even warm. Rather, the thermostat keeps the water from freezing.
  • BPA free plastic
  • Ducks can drink from this waterer, though we periodically offer water in a rubber pan so they can submerge their heads

Refill without removing the lid!

Refill without removing the lid!

Customers love our Heated Poultry Waterer, but they don’t love fiddling with the lid when it’s really cold. (We don’t either!)

So we’ve added a hinged quick-fill cap. It’s just the right size for a garden hose or watering can. With a glance you can also check the water level. Quick-fill lid fits all Heated Poultry Waterers sold since 2019.

For folks that don’t need to worry about frozen water, look to the 3-Season Poultry Waterer. It’s a reliable top-fill waterer with many of the best-in-class features found in our heated version.

Specs

  • Capacity: 3 gal (12 qt)
  • Bucket dimensions: 9"H, 13"Dia
  • Overall height: 14"H

How to Use

Simply fill the bucket and lock the top in place. Either hang with a snap clip or braided cord, or place the waterer on a cinder block.

The detachable cord can be stowed separately during warmer months.

The electrical plug cap (used during summer months) fits over a nub on the bottom of the bucket.

Nipples should be placed just above the birds’ heads. The birds should stretch up slightly to drink.

A few tricks for dealing with stubborn birds:

  1. Remove all other sources of water. Place the new nipple waterer in the old waterer’s location.
  2. Bring a bird’s beak directly to the nipple waterer and flick the nipple. You may have to activate the nipple with the bird’s beak to demonstrate the new water source. (See video above.)
  3. Place a sunflower seed in the drip trough. When the bird pecks at the seed, it will discover the new water source.
  4. Use a red laser pointer to direct chickens to the nipple. Similar to house cats, our chickens will chase and follow the red light. (This was inadvertently discovered by our photo dept and is now our go-to method for getting camera-shy birds to cooperate.)

You don’t have to train every bird in the flock. Just a few will do. Once the first chickens begin drinking, others will follow.

Precautions

We recommend placing this waterer in the coop and protected from wind. The water and nipples may freeze if exposed to direct wind.

Warning: Risk of electrical shock—Connect only to a branch circuit protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI). Contact a qualified electrician if you cannot verify that the circuit is protected by a GFCI.

Troubleshooting

Leaking nipples? As a test, fill up the bucket and keep it away from the birds to determine if the waterer is leaking. If the unit is still leaking when it is not being used, please contact us for replacement nipples.

Not all of the water from the drinker will end up in the bird. Chickens are messy drinkers. Bored chickens may also peck at the nipple even when not seeking water. Over time, this may result in moisture build-up under the nipple. In freezing coops, icicles may form. As long as the water at the nipple remains unfrozen, birds will have a source of water.

Replacement cords must be matched to the type of receptacle found on the base of the bucket. They are NOT interchangeable.

When connecting the detachable cord to the base, make sure the alignment notch slides easily into the groove on the bucket’s receptacle. (See photo below.) Unfortunately, it’s easier than we’d like to misalign the prongs. The result is a non-functioning unit until it’s aligned correctly.

This waterer does its job well—which is providing access to fresh, clean, unfrozen water during winter. Nothing fancy. We find it best to set on a cinderblock so the nipples are at about head high for the majority of the flock (lower if bantams are mixed in). We have used these waterers in temps as low as -20°F (in the coop and protected from wind). The integrated lid handle is useful for carrying water from a hydrant or for hanging the waterer in the coop.

Winter is coming! Can’t believe it took me so long to get my girls switched to a nipple waterer. Water stays clean, but mostly it no longer attracts sparrows, rodents, etc. This unit is insulated and electrical cord detaches for summer use.

I bought the heated poultry waterer for the upcoming winter. So can’t review yet.

But I am using it this summer without the cord. It keeps the water cool all day with a small block of ice added in the morning. It is well made and easy to use.

This poultry waterer is by far the BEST! The chickens are easy to train, it took no time at all! Keeps the water clean and cool for the hot days since it’s insulated which I love as well. I would definitely recommend this product to all the other chicken owners out there.

Great product! I love the new filler hole on top — very convenient! This item is so easy to use and so much cleaner than traditional water feeders. I love the fact that it can heat the water in winter as well. I appreciated that Premier provided extra nipples just in cast any leak or stop working. I would buy this product again.

About Conductivity

Conductivity measures the amount of electrical current a material can carry. The opposite measure is known as resistance.

Tinned Copper Superconductor

Many of Premier’s electric net fences feature a green and white superconductor that has both stainless steel and tinned copper filaments for optimal conductivity.

These “premium” nets are 10 times more conductive (38 ohms per 1000') than “basic” nets offered by our competitors. This enables the electric pulse to travel much farther and be less affected by weed contact.

Customers who are unhappy with netting are often those who’ve chosen nets from China or their farmstore equivalents.

Types of Line Posts

Line posts are built into the net. Three options are available.*

Line Posts Compared
  1. Single Spike (SS)
The best choice, unless your soils are always soft or very hard.
  2. Double Spike (DS)
Posts allow you to push in the spikes with your foot. When soil is hard or rocky, double spikes are more difficult to install and remove.
  3. Drivable Posts (DP)
Allows use of a mallet or dead blow hammer for installing posts in dry, hard or rocky soil. Features a “spike stop” for extra support and internal fiberglass ribs for added strength.

Tip: To insert a line post into frozen or hard soil, use a power tool to drill pilot holes.

* Not all fences have all line post options.

About Positive/Negative (Pos/Neg) Nets

Is your area dry?

Conventional electrified fence systems rely on soil moisture to be effective. However, not all areas have the required moisture.

Dry soil increases resistance—a weaker, less effective pulse occurs that does not deter animals.

To overcome this, Pos/Neg nets* are wired to allow the use of every other horizontal strand as an extension of the ground terminal. Because half the strands are connected to the ground terminal or ground rod, reliance on soil moisture is reduced. A PowerLink must be purchased separately to make the secondary ground connection.

How it works…

In order to receive a shock, the animal must touch both a positive (hot) and negative (grounded) strand at the same time. This will deliver more pain to the animal than an all hot net (Pos/Pos) because moisture in the soil is not required to complete the circuit.

Pos/Neg fences can be converted to Pos/Pos in moist conditions. Remember, all fences must be kept free of vegetation.

* Not all fences have Pos/Neg options.

Line Post Spacing

“Plus” nets—6'8" spacings between built-in line posts*

Line Post Spacing

Standard nets—10' or 12' spacings between built-in line posts*

* Spacings are approximate.
Distance between built-in line posts may vary by product.

Essential Energizer Advice

  • Buy a larger energizer than necessary. When the fence pleases, most folks will buy more fence—and need additional output.
  • Use a low-impedance intermittent pulse energizer.
  • Use a fence tester to check the voltage often.
  • Use enough ground rod(s)—included with our energizer kits.
  • Don’t allow your lead acid battery to discharge below 40%.
  • Use insulated wire that is designed for electric fences.
  • Always connect the fence to an energizer, not an outlet.
  • Visit this link for answers to other common energizer questions.

Two Basic Types

  1. All-in-one Solar
    • Solar units are very portable.
    • Because they need a battery, these units are more costly to purchase and operate than plug-in units.
    • Batteries are less effective in cold temperatures (deplete faster).
    • Most farmstore solar units are too weak, in joules of output, to properly energize netting. That’s why we designed our own.
  2. Plug-in & Battery
    • Least cost to purchase and operate per joule of output.
    • Best for fences exposed to heavy vegetation.
    • Cold temperatures do not affect performance.
    • Recommended for whole-farm systems, but can be complex to install. Higher output requires more ground rods, underground cables, multiple output terminals, etc.

Braided vs. Twisted

Braiding instead of twisting the horizontals increases the frequency of metal filaments on the outside of the strand.

Braided vs. Twisted Electric Net Fences

What’s the benefit?

  1. More metal is exposed on the outside of the strand. This enables improved animal to conductor contact. The electric pulse is better able to travel from the fence and into the animal, resulting in a memorable shock.
  2. A tighter, braided weave results in fewer snags when carried or pulled through pastures, reducing frustration.
